and that's suggest. the drive through berkeley is moving nicely on the freeway but city streets are an issue over by the university. we've got a story coming up after this which i'll let christie smith talk about how it affects shattuck. slick roads and there's a spinout reported here. back to you. >> as you mention, we do follow break newses ing news at alice famo famous chez panisse restaurant in berkeley. it's not too far from the uc berkeley campus. christie smith is there with details. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the thing is you can't really see much of the damage standing across the street there. you get a little closer and it is there. around the side of battalion chief telling us his heart sank

when he realized this was the world famous chez panisse restaurant that caught fire overnight. started about 3:00 this morning with a single alarm fire. 911 caller reported smoke and flames coming from the building. firefighters say when they arrived they saw fire on the ground floor and flames reaching all of the way up to the second floor on the outside of this wood building. >> as i pulled up, you could see the front of the building like a wall of flames that was covering the first floor and lapping up the roof onto the second floor and working its way. at that point you can't tell whether or not it worked on the interior or exterior/interior fire. crews were able to keep the fire contained. >> reporter: one thing that may have made all of the difference here is the fact that there were sprinklers inside. firefighters say that was a real

help. alice waters co-founded chez panisse in 1971 and became world famous known for local organic foods. he mentioned exterior fire but he also said that there is damage to the inside as well. they're trying to save as much of this building as they can. the battalion chief we asked what is the future for this restaurant and he said, well, at the very least it will be closed for some time. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:04. happening now, people living at a homeless encampment near san jose's mineta international airport will soon be on the move. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in san jose with more details on the city's effort to clear out that homeless camp. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the city has already warned the people who live on this large swath of land on spring street between heading and taylor given them warning that they had to leave. today they're going to carry out that warning around 9:00 the city's point man on homeless encampments says they'll come

out here and force these people to leave. it's not like san jose doesn't have homeless encampments. there are roughly 50 to 60 in the city limits. what makes this one unusual is that it is in the wide open. it's not near a waterway. it's not cover by brush. it's very visible to people. you have roughly 100 people and maybe 70 camps just spread out through acres and acres of land here out in the wide open. it's unsightly. it's of course unsanitary and there's concerns about crime though san jose police department does tell the amermey news there hasn't an an uptick in crime since the encampment sprung up. there were tents last year. this encampment exploded in population in january because another enkecampment was shut dn to people migrated here. today at 9:00 they want to take down this encampment. we have not been able to speak to any of the residents yet.

they are still asleep. we do know that nonprofits have reportedly come by offering them temporary housing solutions. it's not clear how many of these people will take up on that offer. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." developing news out of san francisco. police there searching for two suspects responsible for a violent home invasion robbery. this all happened at a home near intersection of 23rd. the suspects forced their way into the home after midnight and pistol whipped that victim. police say they were able to track that suspect's car across the bay bridge in oakland but they ultimately lost track of them. fremont police need your help finding the man connected to a rash of home burglaries. lawrence narrow is accused burglaries near meyer court. he's 25 years old and wanted a

$1 million bond. police say he's 5'10", sometimes has a beard. he has led police on several chases sometimes ditching a car and jumping fences to escape. it's 5:07. more reasons to call this feel-good friday. it's friday of course and christina loren says that rain is going away. we'll see sunshine for the weekend. >> spring-like weather returning very soon to the bay area. good morning to you, jon and laura. taking a live look at your doppler radar. showers just started to subside over the past couple of hours. your highways are nice and slick. we'll see on and off very isolated activity as we head throughout the morning. want to widen out for you and show you this sprawling area of low pressure. this is our weather maker starting to move into southern california. it will continue to move through as we head throughout the day. you can see these little spin up showers coming into the south bay. that will be the case through 9:00 a.m. and then clearing out throughout the day. once that system heads out of here, a lot of instability leftover in our atmosphere.

winds strongest at 4:00 p.m. you really want to travel cautiously for the evening commute and of course it's slick out there as well. you want to give it extra time, wouldn't you say, mike? >> i would definitely say that, christina. you're right. overnight rains and wet conditions lead to potential for spinouts as we have one currently working south bay san jose at 880 and i showed you no traffic impact. folks traveling north along the peninsula you see wet roads past the shopping area. you can see parking lots over there. i want to make sure the shot was wide enough to see the pavement is wet. slick conditions at off-ramps. disabled vehicle reported over toward the bay bridge on the lower deck. looks like things should be off of the roadway. there may be a distraction. no problems on the bay bridge. we just saw slowing on the upper deck coming over from oakland side around treasure island. we'll see as you can see from this live shot a light volume of traffic. east shore freeway moves smoothly. we'll track that because there are still slick conditions around the bay. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much.

it's 5:08 right now. san jose police investigating the city's eighth homicide this morning. this one has an unusual twist. it started as a missing persons case about a month ago and ended with a man found dead in his very own apartment. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is at the san jose police department. she has all of the new details. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. police arrested one person but at this point they're not saying who this person is. neighbors at the crime scene say it is the victim's girlfriend. 69-year-old stanley jacobson was reported as you mentioned about a month ago. his friends worried when he didn't show up to the daily lunch get together. yesterday he was found stabbed to death inside his own apartment at the hill top manor senior apartments on ironwood drive near highway 87. at the scene of the crime one neighbor tells us he saw jacobson's girlfriend regina butler being led away by

officers in handcuffs. >> the person in custody will be interviewed and give a statement on what led up to this. what were people with him doing? trying to exploit him financially, trying to target him? >> reporter: when jacobson went missing three or four weeks ago, police were looking for his girlfriend in the first place. this morning we're working to confirm regina butler is in fact the person san jose police have in custody. the other unanswered question this morning is when was jacobson killed? he was reported missing a month ago. we're trying to find that out. officials say the medical examiner will provide that answers. we're waiting on those results. marla tellez, "today in the bay." google talking layoff this morning. we'll tell you who will be affected all coming up in a live report. also why a peninsula teacher right now accused of abusing her young autistic students will not be facing charges. and a passenger at a local airport arrested after the tsa

welcome back, everyone. good friday morning to you. this is a live look from vatican city this morning where the vatican says the conclave to elect a new pope will now likely start in the first few days of next week. they are meeting today. they are saying they are likely going to choose monday, tuesday or wednesday. we're expecting a press conference later today to confirm that. keeping an eye on vatican city this morning with so much going on. so many changes with a new pope expected to be installed prior to easter. it's 5:13. more layoffs from one of google's division plus monthly job numbers due out in just a

minute. let's check in with jackie deangelis for details. good morning, jackie. >> good morning again. futures still higher as investors await the big news of the day. the february jobs report. economists expecting another month of steady job growth but not enough to significantly bring down unemployment. the forecast right now calling for an increase of about 160,000 in company payrolls with jobless rate ticking down to 7.8%. we had the dow hitting another record high thanks to more positive economic data. the dow rose 33 points to close at 14,329. the nasdaq hitting a 12-year high up nine to close at 3232. meantime, google's motorola business is cutting 1,200 jobs. that's 10% of the workforce as it tries to return to profitabili profitability. cuts will affect people in the u.s., china and india but they come on top of 4,000 layoffs that were announced last summer. in an e-mail sent to employees,

motorola says that costs are too high, it's operating in markets where it's not competitive and it's still losing money. back to you. >> thanks so much, jackie. right now despite all of the rain we're having, here's another good reason it's good to live in california. new england gearing up for that massive winter storm slamming that east coast. snow already falling in new york city and up to a foot expected in central massachusetts later on today. they're getting high waves and flooding as well. a coastal flood warning right now in effect. the national weather service says strong winds, very strong winds could hammer the coastline with powerful waves as high as three feet and that is not pretty, ladies and gentlemen. >> nothing like that in our neck of the woods. we had a little system move through. >> we had much needed rainfall. i'm looking long-term. so next 15 days we'll see another two opportunities for significant rainfall. in fact, on the 22nd of this month it looks like that jet stream is going to be right back to our south and that storm window will open up.

you know how it is around here. it only takes one good storm to make up that deficit that we were running and this morning we are looking a lot better in terms of our average rainfall. there's more on the way like i said at the end of next week and on the 22nd we'll see that jet stream drop to the south. that's far out but we're watching it like a hawk. i did talk to my friend, rob mayeda. he agrees. that's good news when meteorologists have a good amount of certainty. as you can see right now, satellite and radar tells the story. that big area of low pressure. you can see spotty clouds. that's cold air. this is the actual core moving to the south. it will spin up showers in the bay area. you can see the general nature of the showers moving south to north. in the south bay, you have the best chance for that. we'll keep showers in the mix until 9:00 a.m. this morning. finally waking up tomorrow with mostly clear conditions. a beautiful weekend shaping up. so highs today will be on the cool side. 60 in livermore. 59 in gilroy.

look at where we are headed. if you want a taste of spring, we get it. as of sunday we'll jump to 70 degrees. a ten-degree jump between today and sunday. by monday the mid 70s. by tuesday, we hold onto that beautiful weather. sunshine stays all of the way through thursday. and then things start to change thursday night into friday. clouds increase next storm system gets ready to roll through. let's check on that drive. showers rolling through the bay area overnight means slick conditions. mike is tracking that. >> i want to point out ten-degree shift. we lose an hour on sunday. that's the big thing on your calendar. looking here toward the bay bridge. upper deck moves smoothly. camera trembles a bit. the slowing on maps right there at the s-curve starting to bunch up at the top of the incline. that goes on here toward treasure island. nothing severe. speeds around 55 which is right where we like it. we're watching the east shore freeway westbound that's the arrow of your commute direction just fine through berkeley. it's eastbound right around gilman reports of a stalled out vehicle. might be blocking one lane.

getting it off to the shoulder as quickly as they can. a light volume of traffic for the east shore freeway and also on berkeley streets avoid the area or expect traffic control around cedar and vine. that's where chez panisse is. an overnight fire. christie smith continues to be there monitoring the situation. we do have traffic control just off of that berkeley campus. over toward 880 a smooth drive south past the san mateo bridge to dumbarton bridge continuing to the south bay where the roadways and highway speeds are nice but we do have one issue. a spinout at the off-ramp. slick roads. minor injuries. lanes are clear. here's san jose to show you the slick conditions. water is kicking up. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. 5:18. in a shocking reversal, prosecutors dropped all criminal charges against a redwood city school district teacher accused of abusing young autistic students. they found inkoconsistencies in

witness statements and didn't have enough evidence to prosecute. she was accused of kicking two students. she's always maintained her innocence. she still faces a civil lawsuit, however, filed by the mother of one of the children who was allegedly abused. she was sued and several redwood city school districts for more than $1 million in damages. the alleged drunk driver accused of killing a san francisco teen as she was crossing the street will be back in court today. police say that he was just above the legal blood alcohol limit when his car hit and killed 17-year-old saturday night. they say brewer was speeding when he slammed into her. no skid marks were found on scene indicating he didn't try to stop. he's expected to enter a plea and faces ten years in prison. new trouble for baby

delivered by san francisco police just a few months ago. officers are now trying to find the man that stole the baby's diaper bag from his foster mother. take a look at these photos here. police say the woman accidentally left the bag at the security counter at the hall of justice on wednesday afternoon and they say this man picked it up. the newborn made headlines in december after two patrol officers performed cpr on the baby minutes after he was born. they drove him to the hospital and they saved his life. police say his mother had just given birth and abandoned the baby. new details of a man busted at the oakland airport for carrying hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of pot. alameda county sheriff's deputies arrested 21-year-old tony wynn following a random luggage search. tsa agents say he was carrying 67 pounds of pot. that's a street value of $300,000 which all of the bags were vacuum sealed. the luggage was headed for a

plane bound for charleston, south carolina. a new plan to ban gun shows will sbroeb deube introduced th. local control will be allowed over gun shows. the county would have to pass a resolution before a gun show could even be held. this is the latest attempt to stop gun shows at the cal palace. back in 2009 then governor arnold schwarzenegger vetoed such a ban. it's 5:21. coming up, details on the bay area high school district that says it will now and soon hand out of condoms to students. victoria secret takes aim at teens.

little longer than anticipated. we thought they would go off at 2:00 in the morning. >> i vote every day keep them on until 6:00. >> i like. very pretty. one of the best bridges around here. it's 5:24 right now. one bay area school district has a controversial plan to combat teen pregnancies and stds. it's passing out condoms now to students. daly city's jefferson union high school district approved the condemn availability program last month. back in 2009 thorton high school started handing out condoms as part of a pilot program. school officials say that pilot was extremely successful. to get the condoms, students must request them from the school counselor and complete a class in health education. the district hopes to start making condoms available next month. the company known all over the world for putting lingerie on women and now victoria secret is targeting teens. the company slogan for this

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live on the

scene. fire crews say the damage could have been much worse. >> reporter: yeah, you know. it may have been a sprinkler inside the building that may have saved the day. i just got an update from the acting deputy fire chief here in berkeley. he says that there is damage to the restaurant but it may not be as bad as originally thought. that's the good news here at chez panisse where we're trying to talk with firefighters to get a closer look and show you what burned. the front and side of the restaurant is what got the most of the damage. a sprinkler head inside the building may have saved it. this is an all wood building. could have easily burned to the ground. the fire started after 3:00 this morning with smoke and flames outside of the building and reaching up to the second floor and roof. firefighters say they were able to knock it down quickly and within the last few minutes they've had a chance to take a closer look. >> i would say the future of the restaurant is pretty good. the damage on the interior is

very limited. i don't see much -- i don't really see much smoke damage which is one of the larger problems and again that sprinkler head kept it from extending into the building. it limited how much of an impact it had on the interior of the restaurant. >> reporter: now, alice waters co-founded this in 1971 using local organic sustainable food. i spoke with that acting deputy fire chief. i asked him what his reaction was to hearing what restaurant it was and he said that he just hoped on his way here that the damage wasn't too bad. they are still assessing it but maybe not as bad as originally thought. they do believe that it may have started on the outside. i asked if it was suspicious. they say it's just too soon to say. they don't know if it was or maybe it was electrical. they hope to get that information later this morning. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith, "today in the

bay." we also have breaking news to tell you about out of washington d.c. some good news here. the new jobs numbers just released minutes ago. unemployment dropping to 7.7% after adding a big surplus of 236,000 jobs last month. they were expecting in the ballpark of 170,000. this is the largest monthly increase since back in november. these numbers actually don't take into account the jobs lost as a result of the sequester cuts that kicked in on march 1st. economists say these numbers do give us a good idea of where the economy could be heading. so far some good news to look at. we'll get more in-depth look at those numbers with tracie potts coming up in about ten minutes. new this morning, the exact date of the conclave to choose the next pope is expected to be decided later this morning. all cardinals eligible for the voting met at the vatican earlier this morning. a second congregation will take place later this morning about 8:00 and we're told that a

concrete date to begin the conclave will be voted on during that meeting. it appears the conclave will likely begin as we mentioned early next week. happening right now, the city of san jose will soon start clearing out a homeless encampment near the mineta international airport. this one is home to more than 100 people out there. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose. he has more details on this morning's camp removal. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. we spoke to one man who lives here and he is going to pack up but he's hoping the city might give all of them here at this encampment on spring street a reprieve of a day or two. the point man on homeless encampments for the city told us they plan on clearing out this area around 9:00. to give you lay of the land, we're on spring street between taylor and heading. basically between the rose garden and the airport. you have this large swath of land that's owned by the city but it's undeveloped and within the past few months there's been

an explosion in the number of people coming here with their tents because there was another homeless encampment in town that was shut down so a lot of people migrated here. what makes this encampment different from other encampments is that it is in the wide open. it's unsightly. the city argues that it is unsanitary. and there's also concern about crime even though san jose police have said there hasn't really been an uptick but there is concern there could be crime. the city did give the people who live here and there's probably maybe around 100 people, 70 tents. they did give people 72-hour warning saying today at 9:00 we are going to come in here and clean this up. one argument for cleaning it up that the city is putting out there saying, look, if we let this homeless encampment stand, then it will encourage people to move to other open areas and set up encampments there. they want to use this as an example that if there is open land like this, they do not want

homeless people moving in there. there have been nonprofits outreaching to the people saying we can offer you a temporary housing solution. the man we did speak with this morning when we asked him he said why wouldn't you go into a shelter he said the downside of the shelter are rules are rigid and you're also very limited on what you can bring inside a shelter. if you have a lot of items like this man has, you would have to give it up. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob. thank you very much for that update. time to get updated when it comes to the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> temperatures are chilly. you'll need your coat. you might not need that umbrella especially if you are waking up with us north of the golden gate bridge. just depends on how nice you dress for work today. 46 degrees in san jose. very slight chance for some isolated showers throughout the day. most of the bay area is going to stay nice and dry. want to take you into the peninsula. zoom in and show you what we're getting in palo alto to start. 46 degrees. beautiful weather throughout the

silicon valley. that's the only place we see lingering showers for now. we'll eliminate that chance by noon. we'll get sunshine at that point. temps in the 50s. a cool day. 59 degrees inland. 56 bayside. changes just ahead. we'll warm up into the 70s but it's not just the weather that's changing. oh no. spring ahead. that time change. 2:00 a.m. on sunday. your new sunrise will be at 7:28. new sunset at 7:13. you will be able to get outdoors and do more with sunlight out there. bad news is we are going to lose an hour of sleep. nonetheless, we'll be here for you monday morning. we'll get through it together. let's check that drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. not great here at oakland. look at this shot we just see a traffic break going on right now. the chp vehicle at the top of your screen is going left to right across the freeway rolling traffic basically to slow down traffic because north of here it looks like we may have road crews getting ready to clear that late perhaps but there are no other incidents reported from chp through the area.

i'll keep tracking that. construction equipment moving slowing past the coliseum slowing not completely stopped rolling up into downtown probably another 15 minutes for this effect. we'll look at 17 over the summit northbound side. two cars reported on the shoulder and separated by a quarter mile. you'll see two separate flashing lights as we talk to each of those cars involved in the earlier crash. southbound 17 a little slowing. that's typical during wet weather. spinout 880 so we'll end with this shot and i have video for the grapevine. we'll show that to you coming up. we look forward to that. first we celebrate the city of fremont getting national recognition this morning for one thing it has that other cities in the bay area do not. it is actually number four on 24/7 wall street's list of the best run cities in america. fremont has the 11th lowest crime rate in the country and the lowest poverty rate at 6.6%.

the city is said to be so well managed it doesn't even have a credit rating because fremont doesn't need to issue debt to raise money for community projects or resources. the number one best run city in america is virginia beach. fremont is actually the only bay area city to make the list. >> quick suggestion. i think city leaders running fremont maybe call capitol hill and help those lawmakers out there clear up this budget problem. 5:39 right now. the u.s. forest service making an announcement overnight that could make this year's fire season very difficult right here in california. and two homicides in two days. this morning we learn of the bizarre circumstances surrounding san jose's eighth homicide of the year. mom, i invited justin over for lunch.

developing news for you this morning. the monthly jobs report released just minutes ago. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill with details. >> just a few moments ago we

learned this was the best unemployment rate we've had in four years. we're now down to 7.7%. it is less than economists had predicted. they thought it might drop a bit but not 0.2 of a%. this economy created 236,000 jobs in the month of february. that's a lot more than economists had predicted and it was led by a boom in construction. the best hiring we've seen in construction in six years. now, we also take a look at the revisions because every month they go back two months to sort of make some adjustments. december ended up being a little better than originally thought. january not so much. pretty big drop in january but it seems to have been made up by what we're seeing here. wall street, which has had a pretty good week, likely to react very positively as we now look at the s&p, the dow, the nasdaq. appears they are reacting very positively to this news that we created a lot more jobs than

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at the san jose police department. she has all of the details. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. the details surrounding the death of stanley jacobson are still very much a mystery this morning. the 69 year old was found stabbed to death inside his own top floor apartment on ironwood drive near highway 87. family members actually found him. the mystery began about a month ago when jacobson was reported missing. we learned immediately police wanted to talk to his girlfriend, regina butler, for some answers. according to one neighbor who did not want to be on camera, he saw butler at the scene in handcuffs with officers yesterday. friends say they just couldn't be more surprised.

>> this is a shock. i mean, just total shock that this happened. >> i asked the question. i said you are the last person to see stanley. what happened to him? >> now, another question police are asking is when was stanley jacobson killed. he was reported missing three to four weeks ago and only found just yesterday. police have not confirmed to us that jacobson's girlfriend is in fact the suspect they have in custody. however, we can tell you one person has been raechted and police will continue interviewing that person today. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." thank you, marla. san jose police also releasing new details about the city's seventh homicide just two days ago. police say the deadly stabbing is not gang related. the victim believed to be a young man possibly in his teens. his body was found at the entrance to guadalupe oak grove park in an upscale neighborhood.

investigators at this hour have not made any arrests or recovered any weapons. 5:45. richmondolice sergeant is in hot water this morning accused of working with drug dealers in contra costa county. contra costa times is reporting that a district attorney witness says sergeant michael wang took nearly $150,000 in bribes from drug dealers instead of drug deals. a prosecution witness in a related drug conspiracy trial also accuses wang of tipping off a dealer to a gun sting that led to the shooting of a police informant. the richmond police department says sergeant wang is on paid administrative leave during the investigation. think before you pink. that's the message from hundreds of parents and teachers in santa clara this morning concerned over rumored layoffs and pink slips of school administrators. frustrated parents and teachers from the santa clara unified school district rallying at the

school board meeting last night. teachers say they are worried because of if administrators get laid off, a lot of them have the right to return to the classroom taking up teaching positions. the president of the school board says there will be no layoffs and no pink slips will be handed out. actually it's not a he but a she. a former employee started those layoff rumors on facebook. a major snowstorm is blanketing parts of the northeast this morning. this is video that was shot just this morning on long island where on and off snow showers will continue throughout the day. there's also a flood warning up along the east coast or the new england coast rather. gusty winds are expected to bring waves up to four feet high. >> much nicer here. meteorologist christina loren is here to explain the rain is going away. ji >> it's going away. hit the beach or slopes comfortably. you have to love california especially northern california this time of year.

it's just beautiful out there. i want to talk about some of the totals we picked up yesterday. we picked up 2.5 to 3 feet of fresh powder in tahoe. those are overall storm totals. 24-hour totals in the bay area not that impressive. what's impressive is 0.3 inch in san jose came in over three to four hours. sunnyvale picked up over 0.3 inch and oakland didn't do that well. you're going to add these to totals on thursday. 45 for livermore. 46 in san jose. 45 degrees in gilroy to start the day. a comfortable afternoon headed our way. it will be warmer than yesterday. good air quality and whatever showers are lingering still are starting to subside substantially. another very slight chance for showers as we head throughout tonight. i want to show you this area of low pressure that brought us rain. you can see it's impacting southern california. you can see the snow. that's the grapevine which is currently shut down.

we'll get a live update on that from mike in just a moment. throughout the day today, temperatures will start to warm as this area of low pressure continues to move to the south. however, as we head through tonight, you can see we're going to get showers spinning up around that area of low pressure. maybe light precipitation between 9:00 and 11:00 tonight. after that it heads into mexico and we're talking about temperatures in the 70s for the weekend. 59 on the way for gilroy. here's that seven-day outlook. i know you want it on a weekend. 70 degrees on sunday. don't forget set that clock forward one hour. your phone will probably do it. your body needs to adjust. keep in mind we'll lose an hour of sleep on sunday. monday into tuesday, temperatures stay mild. we're talking about mid 70s. a couple isolated 80s on wednesday of next week. here's mike inouye. >> good morning. you can change your clocks but can't change your kids. they'll get up at the same time. you'll have to shake them up on

closed. we do have all of this snow. reporters from knbc showed this on the roadways north of i-5. use 101. back to you. we're learning a simple mistake may have led to a deadly lion attack at the cat haven near fresno. the lion used a paw to open up the feeding cage while dianna hanson cleaned a nearby enclosure. the gate to the cage had been partially left open and believe the lion was able to break dianna's neck with a swipe of his paw killing her instantly. >> she was only with us for a little over two months. she was part of our family. she made instant friendships with everybody up here. everybody loved her. she did it with joy every day that she worked here. and she's going to be missed. i'm so sorry this has happened. >> so sad. tragic. investigators say she was

talking on a cell phone with a co-worker the moments before she was killed. of course that co-worker became very concerned when the conversation ended abruptly. 5:51. funeral services will be held today for late venezuelan president hugo chavez. dozens of leaders from around the world are arriving in venezuela this morning to pay their respects. this is new video from overnight of iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad getting off the plane. chavez was reportedly close to ahmadinejad and often praised him for his anti-west, anti-american stance. in the meantime, venezuela's vice president says chavez's body will be permanently displayed inside a glass tomb at a military museum near the presidential palace. chavez died earlier this week from a heart attack after a long battle with cancer. in an effort to save money, the u.s. forest service may soon let more fires burn instead of actually fighting them.

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live there with firefighters now say they believe they found where it started. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we also just got a closer look at the damage and most of it -- i want to step aside so you can see kind of what we're talking about where that light is shining there. the damage is on the other side. the front right corner of the building. we were able to walk over there just a couple minutes ago. i have to tell you, it looks like it does not extend throughout the building. the acting deputy fire chief says they really need to take a closer look at the support underneath the front right side of the building but what they're also saying is that a sprinkler inside the building really helped to save it from burning down. this started about 3:00 in
